Staff Picks: Beach Reads
The weather is getting hotter and school is out. We all know what that means! It is time for summer reading. Whatever your destination this summer, whether it be the beach, the lake or a “stay-cation,” the Fauquier County Public Library has your summer reading covered!
The Wildwater Walking Club by Claire Cook
Claire Cook’s The Wildwater Walking Club is a book I read a few years ago and one I still recommend to friends. Three women form a friendship during their “walks” and confide in each other the difficulties of raising their children and problems in their marriage. What starts out as a walking club becomes so much more.
We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
I often find myself reading young adult fiction. I could not put this one down. This book had me from the beginning: a story of a teenage girl who suffers from terrible headaches. Cadence learns that her family has been hiding a secret about a terrible fire that happened at their home on the family’s private island. You’ll have to read We Were Liars for yourself to find out what the secret is. It’s a great read for anyone with teenage kids.

Murder on Amsterdam Avenue by Victoria Thompson
If you prefer to read mysteries at the beach, the latest in the Gaslight series is for you. In 1890s New York City, midwife Sarah Brandt and former Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy are planning their wedding. In the middle of the wedding preparations, they are asked to investigate the murder of Charles Fairfax, the son of family friends. Was he poisoned? And if so, who was responsible? Read the book to find out!
Suspended Sentence by Laura Bradford
If you prefer a more modern mystery, you may enjoy Suspended Sentence, the fourth book in Bradford’s Amish mystery series. Clare Weatherly, an Englisher (non-Amish) owner of a specialty gift shop in Heavenly, PA, is drawn into the investigation of a human skeleton found on the Stolzfus farm. She and Jakob Fisher, formerly Amish but shunned, work together to solve the mystery.
