Jane Austen

The Bealeton Book Club met in November to discuss various books by Jane Austen, the classic English novelist known for her grasp of society’s mores, character portrayals, romance and relationship entanglements, and wit. Some memorable quotes are:

  • The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.” Northanger Abbey
  • “My idea of good company is the company of clever, well-informed people who have a great deal of conversation.” Persuasion

  • “A lady’s imagination is very rapid; it jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony in a moment.” Pride and Prejudice
  • “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” Pride and Prejudice

Discussion

Most of the book club members had either read at least one of Jane Austen’s novels or seen at least one of the movie adaptations. Some had read and seen them all! Interestingly, the book club members chose different titles to read and discuss, so it was a fun conversation. Titles read and discussed were:

We also briefly reviewed Jane Austen’s novels Mansfield Park (1814) and Northanger Abbey (1818, published posthumously), as well as the various spin-off series and television and movie adaptations. Members discussed their favorite and least-favorite characters, Jane Austen’s life, and the customs of Regency England.
