Reading Riot: Summer Reading Recommendations
With the Summer Reading Program in full swing, I hope you’re taking advantage of our great library events and enjoying some time off for leisurely summer reading. This being the busiest time of year for youth services librarians, I’ve had to put my own summer reading on hold. It’s an endless dilemma – I love books but have no time to read! But that doesn’t mean I can’t update my to-read list and make some recommendations.
The Summer of Chasing Mermaids is more than just a light summer read. A talented singer, Elyse was destined for stardom until a tragic boating accident took away her voice. Leaving her memories and Caribbean home behind, she starts over in the cold Pacific Northwest. There she is challenged by an arrogant and completely charming playboy to overcome her fear of the sea.
The Unwanteds has been called “The Hunger Games meets Harry Potter.” Magic and fantasy fans will love this series about a society that expels teens who are creative. At 13, identical twins Alex and Aaron are separated, one to attend university while the other finds himself in a wondrous place learning magic.
Remember when Hurricane Sandy blew through the Jersey shore a few years ago? The Summer After You & Me takes place a year after the superstorm and life is slowly returning to normal. Lucy, a local girl who grew up in the beach town, knows better than to get attached to the tourists who come and go. But for a few intense hours she and her crush Connor were thrown together and now in the wake of the storm she is left picking up the pieces of her heart and her home.
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is the classic summer read about four longtime friends who each embark on adventures that they share with each other through a pair of jeans. After wearing the pants, the girls pass them on to the next along with their stories, learning about themselves and growing up in the process. Like faded blue jeans, this is one story that won’t go out of style.
Happy unrequired reading!
