Press Release: Author Marc Leepson Coming to Fauquier County Public Library

Posted by lisap on

(Warrenton, VA) October 10, 2017  – The Fauquier County Public Library will host Virginia author Marc Leepson, author of Saving Monticello (University of Virginia Press, 2003), which recounts the years after the Thomas Jefferson’s death and the Levy family’s efforts to twice save the mansion from deterioration. Leepson will appear at the John Barton Payne Bldg. on Sunday, October 22 at 2 p.m. as part of the “Sunday with the Library” series.

Marc Leepson is a journalist, historian, professor and author of nine books, including Ballad of the Green Beret which was released earlier this year. His writing has appeared in “The New York Times” and “The Washington Post.” From 2008 – 2015 he taught history at Lord Fairfax Community College in Warrenton.

“Saving Monticello” records the estate’s precarious legacy following Jefferson’s death. Repeatedly on the brink of ruination, the manner house was restored by two generations of the Levy family within the nineteenth century. Descended from early Jewish-American colonists, the Levys’ story predates even Monticello and brings to light an overlooked narrative of our nation’s history.

Leepson’s account encompasses Jefferson’s residence and continues through the Civil War to 1923, when ownership was assumed by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation.

“Publisher’s Weekly” calls Leepson’s work an “overdue chronicle” and an “homage to the national treasure and its memorable saviors.” The event will appeal to readers with an interest in local, Jeffersonian, architectural and Jewish history alike.

At the event, Leepson will describe his experience researching and writing about Monticello’s history and accept questions from the audience. The program is free. Copies of “Saving Monticello” will be available for purchase with the opportunity to have them signed by the author.
