Message from the Director: February 2025

lisapavlock

It’s time to count again.

February brings the Great American Backyard Bird Count, when the world comes together for the love of birds.  This is a free, fun event that invites beginning bird watchers and experts to count birds for a real-time snapshot of bird populations.

The library’s here to help.  We have birding videos and nifty birding backpacks for children or adults to check out.  Filled with guides, binoculars, birdcall identifiers and other activities, the backpacks are perfect for backyard bird watching and counting.

To celebrate Black History Month, we’ve gathered books by Black authors — from classic novels to new titles. Explore this list to find great reads, not just for February but for all year-round!

Our dating service is back again.  Enjoy the thrill of a blind date without any of the risks.  Pick up a wrapped book. Each has a brief description, but the title is a surprise.

But if you prefer knowing what you’re in for, try one of our seven book clubs. Fresh lists of featured books for 2025 have just been published.

Ina Garten is a great cook, but did you know the Barefoot Contessa took first place in her city’s science teen fair competition with her A-maze-ing Mice project?  With that as your inspiration, get beyond volcanoes and lost socks to find a really neat science fair project using Science Online.

For the budding scientist in your family, tune into STEAM this month to explore oil spills and the damage they cause.

And, spend the last February Sunday afternoon with Jessica Mathews, international affairs expert and retired journalist Lou Emerson when they discuss global affairs, national security, the media and future of local journalism.  Mathews and Emerson kick off this year’s Sundays @ 2, the quarterly series that brings together distinguished artists, and scholars for conversations about their work and life.
