Consumer Reports October 2017: Elder Care

Posted by vicky on

Check out this information in the October issue of Consumer Reports:

Caring for the Elderly

This month’s cover article, “Who Will Care for You?,” discusses assisted living facilities and nursing homes. In Virginia, the 2016 annual median cost for a private one-bedroom apartment in assisted living was $47,400, slightly higher than the national median. The article examines contracts, long-term-care insurance and how to afford the care you might need.

Need coffee?

Are you one of the approximately 62 percent of Americans who drink coffee daily? Of these coffee drinkers, over half of them have a preference for”gourmet” coffee. Check out “Not Your Average Joe” for information on different ways to brew coffee (French Press, drip, etc.), reviews for drip coffee makers, and reviews for 18 brands of Ethiopian coffee.

Super Bowls

“Power bowls” of whole grains, greens, veggies and a protein, all tossed in a sauce or dressing, are all the rage. Called “healthy comfort food,” they are filling and contain many different flavors in each bite. Due to their popularity, companies are now starting to offer frozen power bowls. See the article “The New Super Bowls” for reviews of 26 frozen bowls; each review lists the main ingredients in each bowl.

The following topics and products are also covered in this issue:

  • Laundry detergents
  • Ranges, refrigerators and dishwashers
  • Family-friendly SUVs
  • “The New War on Obesity”
  • Automobile infotainment systems
