Cover of the April 2019 issue of Consumer ReportsEach April Consumer Reports publishes the widely-popular automobile issue.  With everything from ratings of new models to the best used cars, it is a must-read for anyone considering purchasing a car in the year ahead.  Fauquier County Public Library offers Consumer Reports free to patrons in both digital and print format.

Here are some of the highlights of the April issue.

New Car Ratings

This is probably the most-used section of the April issue with ratings for all types of vehicles – from electric cars to pickup trucks – and everything in between. This year, ratings for 251 new cars, minivans, SUVs, and trucks are included, based on road-test data and responses to member surveys.

New Car Profiles

Another favorite part of the auto issue is the “New Car Profiles.” Each of the 260 profiles includes an overall score based on road-test performance, whether or not certain safety features are standard, and information from Consumer Reports’s exclusive auto survey.

Reliability

“Reliability: New & Used Cars” charts the reliability of 165 models, from 2011 – 2018, noting possible trouble spots–engine, transmission, fuel system, electrical, climate system, suspension, brakes, exhaust and more.

Used Cars

If you’re thinking about buying a used car this year, check out the “Used Car Winners & Losers.”  Ratings of 115 reliable models from 2009-2018 (with electronic stability control, a key safety feature federally mandated as of 2012). There is also a list of the 136 worst used cars, with below-average reliability.
