Beatles Movies: Staff Favorites

Posted by vicky on

Help!Did you know that the Beatles made five movies during the time they were together as a band? They are: A Hard Days Night  (1964), Help! (1965),  Magical Mystery Tour (1967), Yellow Submarine (1968), and Let It Be (1970). Which one is your favorite?

My favorite is Help!, their first color film and by far the funniest of the bunch. It’s a spoof of the James Bond films, with the Beatles being chased all over the world by the followers of the Indian god Kaili, trying to get back the sacred ring of Kaili that a fan mailed to Ringo. In the end, the Beatles triumph, and Ringo’s life is spared, of course.  Check out the Help! music CD as well. Not all of the songs on the CD were used in the movie, but all of the music is great!

Yellow Submarine is also fun to watch. It’s a cartoon, done in the bright psychedelic colors of the late 1960s, also with great music.

Filming on A Hard Days Night began just one month after the Beatles appeared on the “Ed Sullivan Show” in February 1964. A funny, comic version of Beatlemania, it captures 36 hours in the life of a pop group, including screaming fans, and ends with a concert. This movie was recently selected for digital restoration by the Criterion Collection, which is dedicated to restoring and preserving important classic and contemporary films.

The Fauquier County Public Library has all three of these films; check them out today!
