Like it or Love It: Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz (6.23.2022)

Posted on

At its latest meeting, the Mystery Book Club discussed Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz. This present-day mystery novel is the first book in the Susan Ryeland mystery series. “When she realizes that the final chapter of mystery writer Alan Conway’s latest manuscript is missing and Alan later turns up dead, editor Susan Ryeland follows clues buried in the text to investigate the author’s suspicious death.” This was a both a book and a book-within-the-book, so two mysteries for the price of one!

Here’s what members of the Mystery Book Club had to say about Magpie Murders:

What We Liked

  • There were a lot of red herrings which we enjoyed
  • We had fun trying to match up the characters in both books
  • None of us figured out who either of the murderers were, but it was obvious to all of us when we looked back

What We Didn’t Like

  • There were two sets of page numbers, one for the book following the editor and the other for the manuscript that was missing; this got confusing, especially in the audiobook
  • The ending was a bit drawn out, it could have ended sooner than it did
