What We’re Reading: Mystery Book Club September 2020
The Mystery Book Club recently read The Naturalist by Andrew Mayne. It’s the first book in The Naturalist series. Dr. Theo Cray, a computational biologist, is trained to see patterns in nature. When one of his former students is murdered and other mutilated bodies are found, Theo is a suspect (along with a rogue grizzly bear). He becomes involved in the investigation and must use his scientific knowledge to stay ahead of the police.
Here’s what members of the Mystery Book Club had to say about it.
What We Liked
- Interesting characters
- Science used in the book was unfamiliar and intriguing
- Learned a lot about bears
- Unexpected ending
What We Didn’t Like
- Quite a lot of violence
- More of a thriller than a mystery
- Left many loose ends
Other similar mysteries available from Fauquier Public Library include:
- Close Your Eyes by Iris Johansen and Roy Johansen
- Collecting the Dead by Spencer Kope
- Invisible by James Patterson and David Ellis
- Ice Cold Heart by P.J. Tracy
Andrew Mayne has written three sequels to The Naturalist: Looking Glass, Murder Theory, and Dark Pattern. The are are currently on order and will be added to the Fauquier Public Library collection soon.
