Showtime Is Coming To The Library

Posted by Aaron on

Something exciting is going on at your library this summer – It’s Showtime at Your Library – the 2019 summer reading program.

For more than 25 years, this annual free program has encouraged children and teens to continue reading during the summer break, combating summer slide, or the loss of academic gains made during the previous school year. Over the years, the program has expanded to include activities for adults also – bringing to life the phrase “lifelong reader” and making the summer reading program a family activity.

Benefits of summer reading

  • Summer reading helps make reading a lifelong habit.
  • Reading over the summer helps children keep their skills up – resulting in higher reading achievement.
  • Participation in summer reading program activities such as crafts, story hours, arts and other special events enhances the reading experience.

How to join

Programs like It’s Showtime at Your Library make it fun for children, teens and their families to reap the benefits of summer reading.  With over 100 special events and activities planned throughout the summer, readers of all ages can experience magic, music, art, crafts and theater – all free at their local public library.

It’s easy to join and participation is free. Mark your calendar for these key dates:

  • June 1: Summer Reading Program registration opens. Register online or at your nearest library location.
  • June 8: Special events and activities begin.
