Coming This Weekend – Sunday with the Library: Calling All Barbecue Lovers

Hear the word barbecue and you might think of Texas, North Carolina or Memphis. Virginia should be on the list as well. Barbecue is not just food, but a way of gathering friends and family to share an experience together. The concept of “Virginia-style” barbecue gives Virginians something to be proud of and to compete with other big barbecue states.

“Virginia-style” barbecue consists of chopped and sliced pork and beef and can include barbecued chicken, which originated in the Shenandoah area. A combination of vinegar, salt, pepper and oils make up the four different regional sauces used in Virginia-style barbecue.

To learn more about Virginia barbecue, its evolution, traditions and where it can be found, as well as recipes to make at home, join Joseph R. Haynes for “Calling all Barbecue Lovers,” 2 p.m., Sunday, July 30 at the Bealeton Depot. Calling all Barbecue Lovers” is more than an author talking about barbecue, however.  Bealeton-Remington Ruritan Club will be selling authentic Virginia-style barbecue at the event, so be sure to bring your appetite.
