Launchpads Have Landed At The Fauquier County Public Library

(Warrenton, VA) June 20, 2016 – The Fauquier County Public Library is pleased to introduce Launchpads – pre-loaded learning tablets for children from pre-school through middle school that can be borrowed from any of the library’s three branches. Each tablet is pre-loaded with at least 10 high quality, ad-free applications grouped by subject area, theme, grade level and age.

Since they became available in mid-April, the Launchpads have been checked out over 80 times. Both children and their parents are enthusiastic about the devices. Each library branch has 13 – 15 devices available for a 21-day checkout. Check-out is limited to one per card and patrons must be 18 or older to check out a device.

In 2015, The Friends of the Fauquier Library received a grant from the Kortlandt Fund through the Northern Piedmont Community Foundation to purchase the 42 Launchpads and establish a digital literacy lab. The Kortlandt Fund focuses on promoting basic human needs, including access to community assets, the arts and culture, education, wellness and environmental preservation.

“The addition of Launchpads to our lending resources will enable every child in Fauquier County – regardless of income – to experience an electronic tablet for free. It is yet another way the library is carrying out its literacy mandate – this time in the form of digital literacy – to the community we serve,” said Maria Del Rosso, library director.

Tablets are among the newest tools being made available by public libraries to encourage early childhood literacy. The development of digital literacy is vital to the success of children in the 21st century. It includes the ability to read and interpret media, reproduce data and images through digital manipulation and evaluate and apply new knowledge gained from digital environments, according to the University of Illinois.
