Staff Picks: Three Favorite Audiobooks

Posted by librarystaff on

Listening to a book as opposed to reading it can make all the difference for some in enjoying a book. Sometimes reading is not possible or convenient but listening is. From commuters and vacation travelers, people with vision problems or other physical limitations, to gym rats and iPod listeners, being able to “read” a book without looking at the text can certainly be a form of freedom.  Here are a few that the staff at the John Marshall library enjoyed. Record-Setting Reading

Posted by librarystaff on

Bizzard 2016Snow wasn’t the only thing piled high following the blizzard of 2016. The book returns at all three Fauquier County Public Libraries were filled to the top as well!

When we reopened on Wednesday, January 27, library staff checked in 2,174 items! That same day, 1,833 items were checked out.

Thursday, January 28, staff checked in 1,182 items and patrons checked out 1, 573. Wow! Our patrons must have put a dent in their “to read” list. (I know I did!)

Setting Records

While the grocery store was the stop for the staples of milk and bread, county residents had “books” on their blizzard checklist as well. In fact, the number of books checked out as residents prepared for the storm far exceeded the usual number of checkouts. Here is a snapshot:

Weds., Jan. 20
2,178 checkouts *
1,034 patrons

Thurs. Jan. 21
2,610 checkouts
939 patrons

Fri., Jan. 22 (early closing)
1,582 checkouts
542 patrons

Grand Total:  6,370 checkouts and 2,515 patron visits. That adds up to happy library staff.

(*Average daily January checkouts – 1,334)

Don’t be fooled by the 60 degree weather. More snow could still come our way. If it does, remember you can also visit the library’s website from the comfort of your home. By accessing your account online, you can renew materials, place a hold or download e-books, e-audio books and magazines. Visit our E-Media page to view what the library has to offer.

So keep adding to your “to be read” list and make sure your local library is on your next “blizzard checklist.”
