Library Thanks Volunteers

Posted by Aaron on

Library volunteers play an important role in the day-to-day operations of the Fauquier County Public Library. In the last year, over 170 adults and teens volunteered at the Fauquier County Public Library, generously donating 4,000 hours. In addition, nine dogs participated in  a “Paws to Read” program. The certified pet therapy dogs listen quietly as children read to them. This is an encouraging experience for young readers, who gain confidence reading aloud to their nonjudgmental canine listeners.

Board Chairman Thanking VolunteersVolunteers were recognized at an annual reception in Warrenton on April 9. Library board chairman Pat White, library director Maria Del Rosso and library staff members representing each branch and library services personally acknowledge the contributions of library volunteers.

Taking a cue from Voltaire, the theme for the program was “appreciation.” As noted on a commemorative bookmark presented to each volunteer, “Appreciation is a wonderful thing. It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.”

Among their many contributions, volunteers helped process thousands of new and donated books, repaired and cleaned materials and assisted staff with special projects and programs. Special events presented by volunteers were notable for their diversity, such as lectures presented by Dr. David Wiedenfeld on Birds of Prey, a READ Across America program co-presented with the Fauquier Education Association and visits from Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, to name only a few.

Volunteers and Staff MingleFriends of the Fauquier Library volunteers were also recognized. Friends operate the Book Cellar, a used bookstore located in Warrenton. Proceeds from the Book Cellar fund most of the library’s special events for children, teens and adults, including the summer reading programs, family movies, and other afterschool programs. The Friends of the Library also generously sponsor the annual volunteer reception.

Again, thank you volunteers!
